Peter & Rachel

    Quick Facts
    • We are both in our early 40’s – Gen X (we’re ok with the label)
    • Married since 1999.
    • We do not have any kids; this was a choice we made many years ago. Shifting from Dual Income No Kids (DINK) to No Income No Kids (NINK – we made this one up) will be interesting!
    • No pets, but we have previously.
    • Both of us have successful careers that we are putting on pause for this life reset.

Writing a personal narrative about yourself is a bit bizarre. How do you talk about yourself without feeling like you are bragging? Does anyone really want to know that much information about you, or do they really want to know more about the travel planning and implementation? With that in mind, we decided to use a Question and Answer (Q&A) format in case folks were interested in learning more about us.

Where are you from? Where is “home” for you?

Rachel is originally from Vermont and Peter is originally from upstate New York. However, we have been in Virginia since 2001 and consider it home.

What do you do for jobs?

Rachel is a physical therapist. Peter works in public relations and communications. Both of us have been in our careers for around 20 years.

What do you do for fun?

Rachel enjoys exercise and fitness, particularly Pilates. She is a certified Pilates instructor and has integrated it into her physical therapy practice for many years. She also loves to cook and is also an avid photographer. Peter does not enjoy fitness nearly as much as Rachel, but she drags him along to keep him healthy. He enjoys music (playing guitar and ukulele), oil painting, and eating Rachel’s amazing meals. Both of us enjoy anything and everything on the water – boating, paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, swimming, etc. We also love wine, but have had to put our wine consumption on hold to help save for this trip!

    How about pets?

Not any longer, although we are huge pet lovers. We had pets for 17 years…one dog and two cats. Unfortunately, they have all passed. Our love of animals is why we may do some international pet sitting on this trip!

Did you win the lottery, receive an inheritance, or find a suitcase with cash?

    No, we wish!

    Have you traveled much before?

We have been to Hawaii four times (Kauai is our favorite island), Alaska three times (amazing!), and various states and cities in the United States. However, our overseas travel is very limited. We went to Paris, France a few years ago, and Peter went to Spain when he was fifteen. This RTW trip will be quite the cultural experience for us!

Isn’t this a bit extreme? Aren’t there easier ways to reset your lives?

We have done a lot of fun things in the past, including finishing Ironman Louisville in 2009, learning how to sail, and starting and operating a walking food tour company. We also did a mini life reset a few years ago when we sold our way-too-big house, got rid of two-thirds or our belongings, and moved into a 700 square foot apartment. While we love the community we live in and plan to settle there, we feel the need for a bit more adventurous and thorough reset.

Are you scared/nervous/anxious to do this?

Absolutely. Anyone who says this process isn’t scary is lying. There are a lot of unknowns to deal with and most fear is driven from a lack of knowledge. That’s why we are giving ourselves a year to plan!

Is one of you dragging the other one on this trip?

Does dragging each other count? In all seriousness, both of us are very excited about the trip.

Are you both a bit crazy?

Most definitely, but we (think) we hide it well.

So what exactly is a “life reset”?

Found you on twitter and can’t wait to follow your adventures – while I am also early forties/married 20+ years, I am currently travelling vicariously through social media until we save up enough to start our world tour. Are you planning on coming to England? Lots of cool stuff to see here!

      Peter & Rachel · May 5, 2018 at 10:08 am

Hi Polly – It is great to meet you! It’s amazing how many terrific people we have already met before starting our adventure. At this point, we don’t plan to visit England…but that could change depending on what we experience on the road. Identifying which countries we potentially plan to visit has been a big challenge. A year is a long time, but the world is a big place…especially since we plan to travel relatively slowly. We have never been to England before, so if we don’t make it this time we suspect we will in the future!

Hi guys, just a month left to go, very exciting! It’s nice to see some of our fellow Gen X making this journey. We’re also late 30s/ early 40s and resigning this year to take on a life of full time slow travel. Will be following your journey, have you preplanned your destinations or are you deciding as you go? How many weeks do you plan to spend in each location? Enjoy and thank you for sharing your adventure!

      Peter & Rachel · May 29, 2018 at 7:04 pm

      Hi Hannah,

Thanks for the comment and for joining us on our adventure! We are definitely counting down the days. We’ve been planning since last August and at times it really didn’t feel like departure day would ever get here. Now it’s just around the corner.

Since we don’t have a lot of international travel experience, Rachel researched those countries that were most interesting to us and at the top of our list. We have profiles on each available at We doubt we’ll get to all of them, and we’re also going to be flexible if we decide to go somewhere else not currently on our radar.

Length of time in each country will vary. We plan to travel slowly so we don’t feel rushed, but if we find a place that doesn’t appeal to us we’ll move on. We know our three initial countries are Australia, Vanuatu and New Zealand. We’ll be in Australia 7-8 weeks, Vanuatu 3-4 weeks, and New Zealand for 4-5 weeks. Beyond that we’re not sure yet!

When are you guys embarking on your new adventure? Are you traveling the US, overseas, both?

    Hey Peter and Rachael
Just wanted to say HI and thanks for a lovely chat on the top of Mount John, overlooking Lake Tekapo on the South Island of New Zealand. Great to meet you both and Loved hearing about your adventures and looking forward to seeing where it takes you. So inspiring and amazing what you’re doing. Remember “ an unhurried sense of time is in itself a sense of wealth”. Enjoy and maybe see you somewhere in the world again one day.
